Trade reaches ‘unseen’ levels at Wigton opening sale
A catalogued entry of 318 store cattle were forward at Wigton Mart’s January show and sale last week - the north Cumbrian mart’s opening sale of 2010.
Those vendors who braved the elements were rewarded with prices far in excess of expectations and auctioneers reported more cattle could have been sold to strong advantage, with trade reaching unseen levels.
The top price of the day was £1,130, paid for a 26-month-old Charolais heifer from Messrs Mattocks, Skelton, Yorkshire.
Steers sold to £1,020 for an entry from J.S. and H.J. Greenbank, Caldbeck, Cumbria, for a Limousin cross.
Bulls sold to £850 for a British Blue from Messrs Gill, Ireby, Cumbria.
In the pre-sale show, judged by James Crichton,Loughrigg, Cumbria, the top honours went to a 15-month-old British Blue heifer.
The prize-winner was bred and shown by Ross Pattinson, Wigton, and later sold for £1,100.
Reserve went to A. Brough, Thursby, Cumbria, with a 15-month-old Limousin steer, which went on to realise £955.
Averages: Steers £788.82; heifers £798.01; bulls £734.70.
