Texel cross to 420p/kg
THE champion spring lamb sold for £184 (420p/kg) at Chelford’s Easter show and sale.
Prizewinner was a 44kg Texel cross from a pen consigned by Claire Tomlinson, Broxton, Chester. The buyer was Richard Hobday (Butcher), Ashbourne.
Another lamb from Claire Tomlinson’s pen took the reserve championship ticket. This one, a 39kg Texel cross, made 350p/kg (£136.50) to wholesaler Sam Howarth, Oldham, buying on behalf of Neil Mellor (Butcher), Saddleworth.
Several lambs made over 300p/kg, with Chelford butcher Tony Boon paying 320p/kg for a 32kg Texel cross from John Nicholas, Helsby.
The weekly entry of 899 old season lambs peaked at 255p/kg.
Averages: spring lambs 255.1p/kg; old season lambs 184.9p/kg.
