Suffolk sets 26,000gns Shrewsbury sale record
THE fifth national sale of Suffolk sheep at Shrewsbury livestock centre, produced a new sale record price of 26,000gns
This was achieved for the show champion, a ram lamb from Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock, Fraserburgh, Aberdeen.
The lamb, which took all the honours in the show section under judge Pat Greaney, was a son of the 20,000gns Cairness Achievement.
The hammer fell to G.C. Beacom for his Lakeview flock, Co Fermanagh.
Next best – at 13,500gns – was a lamb which stood second to the champion in the open class. This lamb was consigned by Geoff Biddulph who runs the Pexhill flock, Macclesfield, Cheshire – and also by Cairness Achievement – was out of a Pexhill ewe which Mr Biddulph had purchased back from Cairness at an in-lamb production sale last autumn. The lamb now returns with Jimmy Douglas to Cairness.
Pexhills high
Geoff Biddulph had another at 4,200gns selling to W. Borthwick, Ayrshire, helping to give Pexhill the highest average of the day of £4,927 for the four lambs sold.
At 8,200gns was a young lamb from Robin Irwin’s Kings flock, Devon.
The late February-born lamb by Cairness Carbon and out of a ewe which is sister to Kings High and Mighty, was purchased by Roxburghshire breeder Angus O. Wilson to join his Glenhead flock.
Worcestershire breeder, John Sinnett, had a great day with his Stockton flock.
His reserve champion lamb – sired by Stockton Thriller the Second – went on to sell for 8,000gns.
It was purchased by a consortium led by Tom Cox, Staffordshire.
Also selling at 8,000gns was a lamb from Robert H. Wilson’s Strathisla flock, Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
This son of Glenhead Golden Phoenix was purchased by G. Christie, Inverurie.
Next highest
Strathisla also took the next highest price when a son of Strathisla Speedson sold at 5,500gns to A. and S. Simpson, Elgin, Morayshire.
Charles Harding, Warwickshire, sold a son of Drinkstone Elite Supersire from his Bentley flock. It was knocked down to M. Prince, Derbyshire and Messrs Garner and Son, Lincolnshire, for 5,200gns.
Gary Owen, Anglesey sold a lamb by Plasllewelyn Pirate at 4,800gns to A. and S. Gray, Langside, Lanarkshire.
Steve Buckley, Sitlow, Derbyshire, sold early in the sale to a top price of 4,000gns for a Roundacre Raceway son, going to Lilburn Estates, Wooler, Northumberland.
Myfyr Evans, Rhaeadr, sold a young lamb by Baileys Brigadier the Second, at 3,600gns, to Dai Harvey, Builth Wells, Powys.
In all, 42 lambs sold for in excess of 1,000gns, helping to produce a sale average of £1,458 for 145 sold, up £400 per head on last year.
