A REGULAR round-up of news from the nation’s auction markets.

 

EXETER

  • Auctioneers reported a ‘decent entry’ as prime hoggs met the best trade of the season with an overall average of 181.43p/kg for 608 sold. The overall average price per head stood at £79.79 and top price was £89.80 for a pen of 47.6kg hoggs from D. Tapp, Rackenford. Top pen per kilo was 197p/kg for a pen of 42.3kg hoggs from S.A. and A.P. Gillbard, Tiverton. They realised £83.

BAKEWELL

  • Despite the weather conditions on Monday - with temperatures down to -10C – many farmers braved icy roads to attend Bakewell market. An average of 155.8p/kg was achieved for the 144 finished cattle on offer, with young bulls selling to 184p/kg and levelling at 148.8p/kg.

HAWES

  • Prime lambs averaged 201.3p//kg at Hawes on Tuesday with standards peaking at 226p/kg and levelling out at 205.1p/kg. The 221 light lambs on offer topped at 204p/kg.

MELTON MOWBRAY

  • Nearly 2,300 hoggs sold on Tuesday with demand still high. Trade peaked at 232p/kg and top price per head was £101.50 with a pen weighing 38kg. The overall average was 192.87, which was up 2.3p/kg on the week.

LOCKERBIE

  • At Lockerbie market, 592 prime lambs, 148 cast ewes and 12 cast cows were sold. Lambs were down in numbers due to the bad weather, but trade levelled at 198.8p/kg. Top price was 231.3p/kg for pens of Beltex, and Texel hoggs sold to £97.50. Cast ewes sold to £148 for half-breds, with cast rams peaking at £138.
