Newark Limousin sale sees top price of 6,000gns

AN entry of 597 Limousin cattle were sold at Newark at the weekend with a top price of 6,000gns achieved in the female section.

The sale, held on behalf of three local breeders clubs - East Midlands, North West Midlands and North Wales - grossed £780,000.

Top seller was the female and overall champion, Cockleshell Delia, a January 2008-born heifer from Ian and Peter Pitcher, Boston, Lincolnshire. Delia is by Winnington Trumps and out of the Jencra Fanfare-sired Cockleshell Molly. The buyer was R. Barnard, Pontefract, Yorkshire.

The same buyer also paid 4,800gns for another from the same herd and again by Trumps. This was the January 2008-sired Cockleshell Dee, out of a Grahams Samson-sired dam.

In the bull section three bulls sold for the top price of 5,000gns. Firstly Gill and Barry Heald, Retford, Nottingham, sold Coachhouse Dan, a May 2008-born bull by Haltcliffe Picasso and out of Brackenbank Odette. It sold to Jane and Sam Pilkington, Buxton, Derbyshire.

Another from the same herd, Coachhouse Detail, made the same price. This Coachhouse Virgil son is out of a Haltcliffe Picasso-sired dam. The hammer fell to David Harrison for his Harrison herd, Buxton, Derbyshire.

Brian Jones, Brecon, sold Bailea Black Dawson at 5,000gns. This red Limousin with black genetics is by Saloman and out of Baliea Skylark. Naturally polled, it was snapped up by Manby Farms, Louth, Lincolnshire, for use in their McTurk herd.

Another bull with black genetics but sporting a red coat was Springmeadow Black David, from Peter and Nicola Darlington and Daughters, Crewe, Cheshire. Sired by Hewsons Golddust and out of Cracrop Ullaloo, the buyer at 4,600gns was Kevin Bowe, Bowes of Norfolk.

The same buyers also paid 4,200gns for Dinmore Drumbull from Paul Dawes, Hereford.

This June 2008-born bull is by Wilodge Vantastic.

The male champion, Mereside Dubai, from Limousin Society president Roger Hazard and family, Grantham, Lincolnshire, sold at 4,500gns. Sired by Alaska, sold to Messrs Williams and Saunders, Cullompton, Devon.

In the female section black Limousins were again in the top prices. Millington Grange Estate, York, sold Towthorpe Blackbird, a June 2006-born cow by Millington Velox at 4,200gns. The buyer was Brian Jones for his Bailea herd.

An entry of 391 cross-bred breeding and store cattle topped at £2,800 for a British Blue cross Limousin second calver with a Rocky-sired six-week-old Limousin-bred calf. The buyer was T.A. Lyon, Thurlby, Lincolnshire.

John and Denise Davies, Rugby, sold a Waindale UFO cross blue heifer at £1,750 to Andrew Dickinson, Derbyshire, and a Wilodge Vantastic pure Limousin steer at £1,300.

Joe Gilbert, Coventry sold 16 Limousin cross British Blue heifers 12-19 months old to £1,400 and averaged £1,080.62.

Mark Whitlock, Coventry, sold Limousin cross British Blue 11-month-old heifers to £1,080.

Averages: Pedigree - 28 bulls, £3,403.13; 11 cows and calves, £2,972.61; 20 cows, £1,962.85; 18 in-calf heifers, £1,988.72; 103 maiden heifers, £1,481.96. Commercial - 141 steers, £912.67; 227 heifers, £861.56; 31 bulls £702.15.
