Milkers lead Pilch herd dispersal

MILKERS sold to 2,100gns when Amanda Nicholson, Winslow, Buckinghamshire, dispersed the entire Pilch herd of Holsteins at Beeston Castle auction last week.

The top price was paid for a milking heifer, Pilch De Plex Gal Fern, which is due with her second in December to Shottle.

This daughter of Decker was one of ten head purchased by J.M. Griffiths and Son, Barbridge, Nantwich, Cheshire.

Selling at 2,050gns was the second-calf cow, Pilch Talent Th Ina, a daughter of Talent out of a VG87 dam. Due with her third in November, she was purchased by an undisclosed South Wales breeder.

Fourth-calver

Two animals made 1,900gns each; the first was the fresh fourth-calver, Pilch Jack To Peggy, a daughter of Weeton Jackson. It sold giving 47kg to D.R. and A. Higgins, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

The other was the fresh second calf Talent daughter, Pilch Talent AA Neeltje, which sold to A.N. Denford, Bude, Cornwall.

The in-calf and served heifers, most due from October onwards, sold to 1,600gns twice. The first was Pilch De Tale Bonny, a daughter of Decker due in September to Shottle, which sold to James Harrison Farming, Tattenhall, Cheshire.

The second was the October- calving, again to Shottle, Pilch Bax Jack Liz. It sold to P.W.J. and S. Wilson, Cleobury Mortimer, Worcestershire, who bought two others by Baxter and Decker at 1,550gns each.

The group of heifer calves born since last summer topped at 980gns for a daughter of Shottle selling to Jack and Barclay Taylor, Myddle, Shrewsbury.

The top price, however, was a pedigree Aberdeen-Angus bull - Stowe Fine Regard H294. This March 2008-born son of Cheeklaw Esteem D160 sold for 2,400gns to Alan Davies, Betchton, Sandbach.

Averages:158 cows and milking heifers, £1,343.73 (including 63 heifer calves at £606,67); 52 served heifers, £1,240.82; 4 maiden heifers, £748.13; 1 Aberdeen-Angus bull, £2,520; 215 head overall, £1,313.23.
