Demand strong at Darlington store cattle sale
THE first monthly show and sale of the year for store and breeding cattle at Darlington auction mart attracted an entry of 754.
Auctioneers reported the sale met with ‘a strong demand’ with cattle often selling beyond sellers expectations. Farmers Guardian went along.
The champion beast was a home-bred British Blue steer consigned by Robert Dalton, Barnard Castle, Co Durham, which realised £1,100.
The runners-up rosette went to a home-bred Limousin heifer brought out by Messrs Raine, Barnard Castle. This went on to sell for £935.
A entry of 170 young bulls were forward and in this section the championship title went to a home-bred Limousin, consigned by M.W. Skidmore, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, which later sold for £835.

In the store hoggs section, where 515 went through the ring, continental types sold to £81.50, Suffolks to £80 and Mules to £59.20. The 138 in-lamb Mule ewes sold to a top of £158.
Also forward were 132 cast cows, which sold to 148p/kg for continentals and 117p/kg for black and whites. The top grossing price in this section was £1,539.20.
