Around the marts - June 18

A WEEKLY round-up of all the latest news from livestock sales around the country (June 18).

Sedgemoor

An increased entry of store cattle met a brighter trade last Saturday, with younger grazing cattle in particular demand. Steers sold to £978 for a 25-month-old British Blue from J. and J. Meaker and Son, Pitney, who also sold a 23-month-old Charolais at £930. Steers averaged £640 with heifers peaking at £850 and levelling at £554.


St Asaph

The 3,529 lambs forward last Thurdsay averaged 186.11p/kg and sold to a top of 248p/kg for standard weights. Medium weights sold to 230p/kg and lights to 234p/kg. The 2,072 cull ewes sold to £117, averaging £59.66 and rams topped at £102, averaging £63.33.


Newark

The 121 OTM cattle on offer last week averaged 117.74p/kg (£823.15) and top priced cow was a Limousin at 152.5p/kg (£1,076.65). The best beef cows sold at around 130p/kg with plainer sorts at 117-128p/kg. Black and whites sold to 119.5p/kg (£1,092.23) with the best making around 110p/kg.


HEXHAM

OTM cattle were a sharper trade, but lambs easier in Hexham on Tuesday. Limousin OTMs reached 144.5p/kg to gross £1,011.50, while Blues sold to 115.5p. Quality lambs sold to 197.9p/kg for Texel crosses while on a headage basis, heavies reached £87 - again for Texels.


BAKEWELL

Store cattle were a good trade on Monday. A yearling Limousin cross feeding bull made £800, while in the same section,
14-month-old Simmental bulls were up to £750 and similar age Limousin cross heifers at £735. Yearling steers made £650 for a Limousin cross and a Limousin cross 15-month-old made £875.
