23,000gns top for Limousin Greenwell Amy

THE five-year-old Limousin cow, Greenwell Amy, sold at 23,000gns and led a strong trade at the dispersal sale of the Greenwell pedigree herd of J.T. and J. Nattress and Son, Lanchester, Durham, held at Borderway Mart last Friday.

Ninety-seven lots sold to gross £415,000 with 54 cows served and or suckling within that averaging £5,425 and 27 animals selling for 5,000gns or more.

Purchasers of three of the top four lots at 23,000gns, 12,000gns and 9,800gns was Procters Farm for their 60-cow Procters pedigree herd at Slaidburn, Clitheroe.

The day’s top price, Greenwell Amy, is by French bull Tanin and is out of the home-bred cow, Greenwell Norma, sired by the herd’s Igolo. She was sold with her May 2010-born bull calf at foot, Greenwell Fieldmaster, which is by Vagabond.

At 12,000gns was the French-bred cow - Ulna. This 2003-born cow is by Mas Du Clo and out of Leda. She sold with her fourth calf at foot, a heifer, by Casimir.

Another Tanin daughter, Greenwell Anette, sold for the day’s fourth top price of 9,800gns, also to Procters. Out of Greenwell Lenette, this five-year-old cow was sold with her May-born bull calf at foot, Greenwell Fieldmarshall, which is also a son of Casimir.

Casmir himself sold for 10,500gns to Andrew Ewing, Annan, Dumfriesshire. This French-bred bull was born in 2007 and is by Univers and out of Sabine.

Another five-year-old cow, Greenwell Afia, made 9,500gns when selling to A.H. Hunter, Glanton, Alnwick. Afia is by the Nelombo-sired Tiret and is out of the Master daughter Greenwell Safia. She was sold with her third calf at foot, the April-born heifer Greenwell Fia, a Vagabond daughter.

Greenwell Amber, another five-year-old cow, made 9,000gns. Again by Tanin, was sold with a Vagabond-sired bull calf at foot. The hammer fell to E.D. Griffiths and Co, Hen Dy Gwyn, Carmarthenshire.

Stock sire, Vagabond, made 8,800gns when purchased jointly for Elite Beef Semen by Mark Phillips, Ivegill, Carlisle, and S. Littlewood, Newmill, Holmfirth. Vagabond is a son of Neuf and is out of the Idem-sired Niche.

Tanin again featured as the sire when the four-year-old Greenwell Bonita sold for 7,500gns. Bonita sold with her second calf at foot - a March born heifer by Vagabond. Purchaser was D. and V. Hill, Great Asby, Appleby.

At the same price was Greenwell Coco, an April 2007-born Tiret daughter. Selling with her March 2010 Casimir-sired bull calf at foot, the pair were snapped up by M.S. Potter, Goosey, Oxfordshire.

Greenwell Cynthia made 7,200gns, selling to Messrs Taylor, Great Asby, Appleby. Another daughter of Vagabond, the June 2007-born Cynthia sold with her first calf at foot, the March 2010 born bull calf Greenwell Fonz sired by Casimir.

Two cows were bought by B.R. Lawson, Richmond, Yorkshire, at 6,500gns and 5,000gns respectively. At 6,500gns was the 2000-born eighth calver, Greenwell Rana, a Master daughter sold in-calf to Casimir and sold with her Vagabond-sired bull calf at foot.

At 5,000gns was the 2006-born Tanin daughter, Greenwell Beauty, sold with a Vagabond-sired heifer calf at foot.

54 cows served and/or suckling, £5,425; 7 served heifers, £2,940; 21 maiden heifers, £2,420; 2 stock bulls, £10,132.50; 13 young bulls, £2,301.92.
