2,200gns peak for dairy cattle at Carlisle
AN entry of 200 dairy cattle of all breeds and ages went under the hammer at Carlisle last week.
The Border and Lakeland Club sale produced a top price of 2,200gns paid for Hebrides Bradley Carmen from Kenny and Betty Robison, Isle of Gigha, Argyll.
This heifer, by Rockalli Bradley and off a Lyster dam sold to C. and L. Mair, Dumfries.
Another from the same home; this time Weaverline Bench Eddie, sold for 2,050gns again to Messrs Mair.
At 2,000gns was one of three fresh heifers from N. McGarragher’s Aghavilly. Lochmaben, Dumfries. By Southland Marker and off a 50-tonne Ked Juror cow it sold to Newheaton Holsteins, Cornhill-on-Tweed.
In the pedigree Ayrshire and Red and White section, the trade was similar, with the fresh and in-calf heifers looking excellent value for money.
Top price at 1,800gns was the reserve champion - a fresh heifer from M.W. and A. Stevenson, Stranraer. By the home-bred sire Stevenson’s Saltire it sold to Newhouse Farms, Dumfries.
Champion in the Red and White section was Swaites Bracken 10 from J. Adamson and Son, Pettinain, Lanark, and selling at 1,780gns to W. Moffat and Co, Kirtlebank, Gretna.
It was the same story in the Jersey sale, with fresh and served heifers being bought for reasonable prices. The leading bid was 1,350gns for a daughter of the home-bred sire Hillside Sapphires Jewel from G.M. and A.J. Harrison, Leyburn, and selling to J. and I. Watson and Son, Wigton.
At 1,300gns was another fresh heifer this time from the Thomson family’s Farlam herd, Brampton.
Averages: Border and Lakeland - 8 cows in-milk, £1,414.88; 32 heifers in-milk, £1,692.46. Red and White - 2 cows in-milk, £1,034.25; 12 heifers in-milk, £1,569.34; 2 in-calf heifers, £1, 732.50. Jersey - 4 cows in-milk, £821.62; 3 heifers in-milk, £1,260; 2 in-calf heifers, £1,286.25; 1 maiden heifer, £1,155; 1 bull, £735. Croftlands consignment - 28 in-calf heifers, £625.88. Newmoor consignment - 7 cows in-milk/in-calf, £424.50; 10 maiden heifers, £3,10.80.
