Royal Welsh: Demand growing for Welsh lamb

EUROPEAN demand for top quality Welsh lamb and beef is continuing to grow, according to Rees Roberts, chairman of the Wales-based Hybu Cig Cymru red meat promotional agency.

“We have had significant success over the past year, with the value of exports in 2008 topping £108 million – a lot of money in anybody’s language,” he said at today’s (Monday, July 20) opening day of the Royal Welsh Show.

“The strength of the Euro against the pound has obviously had a positive impact on our overseas sales drives.

“But more than that is the knowledge that we do produce meat that is not only of the highest quality, but is also environmentally-friendly.

“It has been this way for generations, and is the secret of our success. It is one of our major selling points, which explains why Welsh lamb is such a sought-after products across Europe and beyond.

“France and Italy are two of our major export markets with more than £66 million of Welsh lamb and £2.5 million of Welsh beef going to France, and almost £6 million of lamb and £3 million of beef to Italy.

“I can also announce further inroads into the European market. Randall Parker Foods, will be supplying Belgian supermarket Delhaize, Dunbia have a contract with Spanish chain Eroski and Welsh Country Foods is selling to Pam supermarkets in Italy.”
