Royal Welsh 2009: Young farmers show off their talent

The Welsh Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs demonstrated great sportsmanship and showmanship to make this year’s Royal Welsh Show bigger and better than ever.

Competitions, sheep shearing, crafts and club promotion helped get the first day off to a flying start, while cookery, stockjudging and dancing followed on the second.

It was an early morning for members who took part in the Lleyn sheep stockjudging competition. Ynys Môn took victory, beating Clwyd and Montgomery, who were second and third respectively.

In the crafts, members had submitted their theatrical masks prior to the show, but were asked to bring replica materials to complete certain tasks as instructed by the judge within a time limit of one hour.

Stephanie Evans walked away with a win for Carmarthenshire, who had multiple wins throughout the day.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Rural Affairs Committee challenged other collaborative organisations, to expose their softer side in a milk-drinking boat race to establish the overall champion - an accolade the hosts went on to win.

In the flower arranging, members were asked to depict a ‘Musical’ and it was Alice James, of Pembrokeshire who took the award from Brecknock member Gemma Evans, who was runner-up.

As always, the tug-of-war competition proved hugely popular, with counties battling it out against each other to take the honours. This year, it was Carmarthen Federation who took first place for the boys and in the female section, Radnor Federation demonstrated they had the best pulling technique, with Carmarthenshire second and Ceredigion in third.

Unfortunately, the All Wales YFC Rugby 7s final - where Brecknock Federation was due to play Carmarthenshire Federation - had to be cancelled due to the weather.

The competition is now due to be held during the Wales YFC AGM in September.
