Prototype mechanical hoe for faster speeds
The Dutch Arable Research Institute (PPO) revealed the prototype of an in-the-row mechanical hoe.
Designed for any row crop where plants are spaced at a minimum distance of 20cm, the technique relies on air pressure to power the cutting blades in and out of work.
Although French-firm SARL Radis uses a similar system on its mechanical hoe, the aim of the Dutch project is to produce a machine that is capable of operating at much faster speeds of 6-7kph. Using laser technology to detect when the knives need to pulled in and out of work, the plan is to start field tests with a prototype within the next few weeks.
