Perth Show
Set in central Scotland, Perth Show, organised by Perthshire Agricultural Society draws exhibitors from a wide area. NEIL RYDER reports.
LIMOUSIN and overall beef awards went to the young bull, Windsole Appollo, from William Lawson of Auchterarder, at the Perth Show.
Led by Katherine Lawson, the bull was also overall junior and continental young bull awards.
By Oxygene, Appollo is out of Windsole Rosemary. He comes from a small herd based on eight breeding cows and was shown successfully at the Royal Highland, Kirriemuir and Stirling shows.
The Charolais champion and runner-up for the overall beef title was Firhills Velocity, a heifer from Jim Muirhead of Arbroath. Velocity is out of Firhills Ruth and is by Moyness Statesman. She was champion at Kirriemuir and Fife shows.
Inter-breed judge, Terry Coghill, of Orkney said there was very little to choose between the champion and reserve and felt that much more would be seen of both animals in the future. The Limousin was a very smooth animal with tremendous plates, tail head and loin. It was, perhaps, just a little smoother than the Charolais, he said.
Dufftown based Glenrinnes Farms took the Beef Shorthorn championship with their young cow Glenrinnes Ulilia, a Glovelands Puccini daughter shown with her October-born heifer calf at foot. She was reserve at Alyth Show earlier in the year.
Glenrinnes runs a stratified organic beef system with a small pedigree Beef Shorthorn herd producing heifers put to Simmental. These cross-bred cattle form the farm’s 160-strong commercial suckler herd which are put to Charolais as the terminal meat sire. Glenrinnes added the breed reserve with a stock bull, Cairnsmore Sam.
There were few surprises in the Aberdeen-Angus lines when the heifer, Cardona Fiona, from Robert Galloway, Doune, took the breed trophy – a week after a Border Union Show triumph.
Agricultural engineer, Kelso Logan, of Clackmannan, headed a strong Highland line-up with his heifer, Ban-Iarla Morag 3, of Blairlogan. She took leading awards at Doune and Dunblane and Great Yorkshire Shows and was first in her class at the Royal Highland Show. It was the second year in succession she had taken the Perth award. Hereford numbers were boosted by the presence of the Scottish National Hereford Show. Overall champion was Panmure 1 Plum, from J.M. Cant and Partners, of Arbroath. Led by Mr and Mrs Cant’s daughter, Audrey Anderson, the heifer was second in her class at the Royal Highland Show and comes from a 35-strong Hereford herd.
Simmental honours went to Tom and Evelyn Henderson of Crieff with the cow, Desswood Lady. She has taken awards at the Royal Highland, Fife and Doune and Dunblane. She is out of successful show cow, Dever Gunda. Mr Henderson is dairy manager to Jim McLaren, chairman of the NFU Scotland milk committee and has just two cows and two heifers in his Simmental herd.
Double honours in the Belgian Blues went to the family team of Ian Wainwright and sons James and Andrew of Cupar, Fife. They took that championship with bull, Norton Usher.
Linlithgow exhibitors, G. and A. Hamilton took the Blonde trophy with their cow, Campbell Brownill Tina that took awards at Central and West Fife, Stirling, and Doune and Dunblane.
