Dairy Event 2009: Raising the bar for farm health planning

A graduate vet and an agricultural student have each been awarded the RABDF Farm Health Planning award - an awareness raising initiative for the industry’s younger members.

DEMONSTRATING a pro-active approach to the sector, Rachel Mather, a recent Bristol Veterinary School graduate, and Mark Price, a University of Reading student, were awarded £500 cash prize and a further £500 for the universities they represented towards a farm health planning project.

Rachel, 23, was praised by judges for demonstrating how the veterinary sector can work together with farmers to successfully implement the concept of farm health planning.

“It is important young people help plan towards herd health where possible, it is something I think is really important for the future of our industry,” she said.

Mark was unable to attend the event as he is in New Zealand, but co-judge, John Sumner, FHP project manager at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show, said Mark had the edge among the agriculture students because he identified the benefits of implementing a farm health plan on his family’s farm in conjunction with the farm vet.
