Aza’s swansong at Tynwern sees Wyn and Non take the honours

THE last sheepdog trial in the South Wales Association’s calendar, held on December 28 at Tynwern Farm, Llanrhystud, and hosted by Emyr Lloyd, will be looked back on as a poignant event.

Despite the cold weather, and his failing health, Aza Pinney not only attended, but ran his dog. Unfortunately, it was to be his last trial, as he died in hospital the following week. His courage, determination and dedication to trialing will long be remembered.

The course was set on the usual field, which sloped gently away from the handler.

The outrun was about 275 metres (300 yards), the first drive was about 140 metres (150 yards, second 105 yards) and the return was 150 metres (160 yards).

The Lleyn ewe lambs handled well as is shown by the high scores achieved.

Split into two sessions, 58 runs were completed, and the judges came from South and North Wales respectively. To accommodate the number of runs, there was no shed or single.

The supreme champions in 2009, Richard Millichap and Dewi Tweed, were beaten by one point in the morning session, by Wyn Edwards, with Non, so close was the competition.

Would trial secretaries please advise me, Dai James (Tel: 01558 668 660, email, d1jhj@tiscali.co.uk) of dates and results of trials in South and Mid Wales for inclusion in this column.
