Capital of Culture: Countryside is cited

FARM Stay UK has launched a bid for the British countryside to be named as a capital of culture.

Joining forces with the National Trust and the NFU, the accommodation specialist hopes the ambitious move will support the struggling rural economy.

“We are instigating a bid for the UK City of Culture 2013 as we know the countryside has just as much to offer culturally as any city in the UK,” says Andy Woodward, chief executive of Farm Stay UK, which represents 1,000 working farms offering tourist accommodation.

“Our bid will focus on the facilities available in the countryside which far outstrip any traditional city destination.”

Support micro-businesses

The message behind the initiative is the countryside needs to be supported and is struggling every bit as much as any city, if not more. With the countryside dominated by micro-businesses run by small family units, it is hoped a successful bid would enable the countryside to come together to showcase what it is capable of.

Jo Burgon, head of access and recreation at the National Trust, says: “It could easily be argued that the cultural contribution of a countryside area such as the Lake District far outweighs that of any UK city,”

“Today, the countryside acts as inspiration for millions of visitors each year, providing a landscape of culture packed with cultural activities. The countryside is an important part of UK culture frequently overlooked, which is why we are keen to back this bid.”
