RPA re-opens offices after flood chaos

THE Rural Payments Agency’s (RPA) Workington site has re-opened for business after being closed for two days due to the flooding in Cumbria.

The closure of the key RPA office due to difficulties faced by staff in getting to work has affected the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) and the agency’s call centre.

“Our aim is to offer a normal, full service as quickly as possible after the adverse weather and transport conditions in Cumbria, but please accept our apologies if you experience delays or are unable to get through to us on the telephone,” the agency said today (Tuesday, November 24).

“If your query is not urgent, we recommend that you call later this week.”

The Environment Agency has warned that, with more heavy rain forecast, Cumbria could face further flooding over the next 24 hours.

The agency said it was closely monitoring river levels ahead of the rainfall, expected to reach 25–50mm across Cumbria this evening and into tomorrow (Wednesday, November 25), with up to 100mm of rainfall over the Cumbrian fells. Wales could see up to 50mm of rain tomorrow.

The agency said river levels were not expected to return to those experienced last Thursday and Friday and widespread property flooding is not currently anticipated.

“However, river levels across Cumbria remain high, the ground is still saturated and residents and emergency services are being warned to be prepared to take action if necessary. The public are being warned to stay away from flood water and rivers and follow local advice on road diversions.”

A total of 17 flood warnings remain in place in England and Wales.
