EU unveils ‘compulsory’ organic logo
ALL organic food produced in Europe will be obliged to carry a new logo from July this year.
More than 125,000 EU citizens cast their vote in a competition to decide which logo they thought should represent Europe’s organic producers.
The winning entry (pictured) is meant to ‘enhance consumer protection and promote organic farming’.
But the UK certification body Organic Farmers and Growers branded the design ‘dull and uninformative’.
Unlike the current logo, the winning entry will be obligatory for all pre-packaged organic products that derive from the 27 Member States and meet the labelling standards.
Producers will still be able to use national and private logos in addition to the compulsory EU logo.
