‘Energy farming’ set for expansion

GREEN energy production is set for further significant expansion on UK farms.

Specialist Farmgen has unveiled a £30million investment to create what is claimed to be the biggest anaerobic digestion ‘energy farming’ expansion programme in the UK.

The company is already building a £2.5m environmentally-friendly power plant near Blackpool, Lancashire, which is set to start providing electricity to the national grid later this year.

Farmgen has funding from four major private investors and bank support and has now announced a rolling programme which will see more AD plants in operation on farms across the UK.

The new AD plants will use maize, grass silage and other crops from fields surrounding the participating farms, as well as some animal slurries, to create ‘biogas’, which is then used to generate electricity.
