Arla confirms plans for one billion litre UK processing plant
ARLA is to build the world’s biggest milk processing plant on the outskirts of London capable of processing one billion litres of milk a year.
The facility, almost twice the size of any existing UK plant, will be operational in 2012 and Arla said it expects it to be the ‘most technologically advanced of its kind’.
The move follows a recent commitment by Arla to invest in its UK business as part of its strategy to grow its presence here.
Peter Lauritzen, chief operating officer of Arla Foods UK said”Arla is totally committed to a long-term sustainable future in the UK and the construction of the new dairy confirms that commitment.
“Incorporating the most sustainable building techniques the dairy will be the largest, most efficient and environmentally advanced in the world.”
The plant is expected to create around 500 jobs and detailed plans will be put to the board in early 2010 before construction can begin.

A top price of 2,700gns was achieved and 12 lots sold for 2,000gns or more when the Goostrey herd of Holsteins and Aryshires was dispersed for Griffiths Farming, Cheshire.

Arla are barking up the wrong tree .UNLESS THEY ALL START PAYING MORE FOR THE MILK THEY WONT HAVE ANYTHING TO PROCESS BY THE TIME ITS BUILT

on one hand looks like they want british milk, but will it all be imported milk, transport across europ is so cheap, if they want to keep this plant working 100% they have got to offer british farmers a price that will make it worth producing do that in time, it takes time to get the cows to millking age, and they will get the milk, now lets see it they put there money where it's wanted

Arla have told us it will be 100 per cent British milk being processed at the new plant and they will be looking to recruit more producers to the AFMP.

Why is building a 1 billion litre a year processing plant any more sustainable than hand milking a cow? What does this word sustainable mean? Shouldn't we be asking will this step be fulfilling/rewarding? How desolate will humans be if this move towards mass production continues? What will man be left to do? They will certainly have to build more offices to keep us cooped up and off the land!

Your arla article states they will be producing milk I suggest you are confused between producing and processing This new plant will be bound to render some current facilities uneconomic what effect will this have on dairy farmers?.
