New chief vet to shape strategy
THE Scottish Government’s new chief veterinary officer will take up his new post next month, where he will be responsible for helping to shape a new strategy for controlling animal disease.
Simon Hall, veterinary head of International Animal Health at Defra, is expected to be in his new post by July 13. He succeeds Charles Milne, who has been appointed as director of the Scottish Food Standards Agency.
Mr Hall joined MAFF in 1997 as a veterinary policy adviser, moving to the national control centre for foot-and-mouth in 2001, before work on International Animal Health.
His work in Scotland will see him head up the Government’s compulsory bluetongue vaccination campaign, as well as lead a new animal disease eradication strategy.
As part of a joint industry and Government action plan, he will oversee plans to draw up new rules to help rid Scotland of diseases – including BVD, scrapie and bovine TB.
The industry is currently drawing up plans for a new testing regime for BVD. Discussions are set to begin next month.
