Manx producers’ stepping stone to retail

ISLE OF MAN supermarket chain Shoprite has thrown open its doors to small-scale food producers on the island.

It is to allow them a small area of its shop space to promote themselves and their products.

For some, said the supermarket’s corporate strategy and projects manager, Carol Glover, it could be the stepping stone to a retail listing.

She was speaking at the Tomorrow’s Farmer awards at the Royal Manx Show.

Biggest suppliers

She said the firm’s four biggest suppliers were all Manx and that it would be spending some £21m this year on locally sourced goods and services – and a good percentage of it produce. She quoted an IGD survey showing more than 70 per cent of shoppers wanted ‘local’ and this she said, presented an enormous opportunity for food producers on the island.

She said her business would be allowing producers to actually sell their produce within the Shoprite stores for a limited period.
