Less extreme change other breeds

THE PLI scoring system for the coloured breeds had also been revised, although the change in ranking was not so extreme, said Mr Winters.

“Due to smaller population sizes, the breed leaders tend to be further ahead of the pack and we have seen most of these maintain their standings,” he said.

“It is important to recognise the importance of keeping all breeds on the most up-to-date ranking system. However, producers must not compare sires between breeds – just within them – as each breed uses its own genetic base.”

As with the Holsteins, the CDI has generated ‘all-round’ lists for the coloured breeds using a set of minimum criteria.

“Although the number of bulls within these breeds having semen available is much lower than that of Holsteins, this can still be a quick and useful way of finding proven sires that meet certain requirements of any breeding policy and ensuring pedigrees with no holes,” said Ms Maddrell.
