Landrace proves supreme

A top level turnout of pigs and some lengthy judging sessions eventually saw the modern breeds supreme championship going to a father and daughter team.

Out in front was the home-bred, two-year-old Landrace sow, Ceirios Marilyn 34, from Gareth and Gail Davies, who keep 12 breeding sows at Dryslwyn, Carmarthen.

Standing reserve was a 10-month-old Welsh entry, Slade Winchat 10, from Glamorgan Vale Pedigree Welsh Pigs – a two-farm link-up between Helen Tongue and John Flay, Capel Llanilltern, Cardiff.

The top award for traditional breeds went the way of a home-bred, three-year-old Berkshire sow, Kilcot Royal Lustre 11, from Sharon and Lewis Barnfield, of Newent, Gloucestershire. Runner-up was a home-bred Large Black sow, the three-year-old Sock Bess 40, from P.G. Snell and Sons, Yeovil, Somerset.
