Lameness delegates’ food for thought

DELEGATES were given food for thought by three different speakers at the conference.

Dr Mike Coffey asked if it was right for vets to treat lame cows, as this meant they would be able to breed, passing the problem on to the next generation.

Dr David Main asked should the industry be doing something about farmers who were not working to improve lameness levels.

‘Industry must act’

“Not all farmers are going to respond to positive messages and support, and the industry may want to do something about them,” he said.

“I think we need to be honest and recognise an enforcement approach may be needed in some circumstances.”

And Dr Christer Bergsten, of the Swedish Dairy

Association, said farmers should prioritise laying rubber at the feed face and not in alleyways, as rubber in alleyways could stop cows lying in cubicles – unless cubicles were well designed.
