MANAGING director of ABP’s UK operations, Richard Cracknell, said the company would welcome the introduction of automatic grading,
having trialled it at the Perth plant, and experienced the adoption of VIA in parent company AIBP’s plants in the Republic of Ireland.
“It would remove any arguments with producers which you inevitably get where the human element is involved and would improve transparency. I have no evidence that it is any more inaccurate in assessing fat than is a human grader looking at the outside of a carcase,” said Mr Cracknell.
“In fact, I would argue that it can be harder for a person to be accurate on the fat content.
“We still have the installation in Perth and use it for our own purposes, although unfortunately we cannot pay farmers on it.”
