Jonathan Crickmore, 29, Fen Farm, Bungay, Suffolk
DEVELOPMENT of the farm facilities, the purchase of a second farm and stringent disease control has facilitated great changes at Fen Farm.
A 20:20 milking parlour and dairy was installed in a new specifically designed building in 2006 which has given Jonathan, who milks around 200 commercial Holsteins cows, increased control over parlour hygiene and animal welfare.
Jonathan has also changed milk distributors to join a local co-operative as he believes, in the current climate, it is necessary to concentrate on local produce and more efficient, cost-effective distribution methods.
Dairy Herd performance to March 2009:
- Herd size: 209
- Yield per cow (l): 8,823
- Feed rate per litre (kg/l): 0.26
- Margin over purchased feed per cow (£): 1,864
- Margin over purchased feed per litre (p): 21.66
