Deeside and Llysfasi colleges seal merger
THE merger of two North Wales colleges - Deeside College and Coleg Llysfasi - to form one of the largest land based educational learning centres in Wales and the UK was sealed at the Royal Welsh Show by Assembly First Minister, Carwyn Jones.
From August 1 it will provide courses for almost 22,000 students each year, employ over 1,000 staff, and have an annual income approaching £40 million.
It is hoped the creation of a merged college able to serve the diverse needs of North East Wales and the land based sector in particular, will deliver many benefits to the region.
The merger will provide security for the future of land based provision in North Wales, including from Deeside College, animal care, equine, floristry, horticulture and land based engineering and from Coleg Llysfasi, agriculture, agricultural engineering, animal care and forestry and conservation.
It will also provide learners with a broader range of courses available through the medium of Welsh.
“Following our successful merger with the Welsh College of Horticulture in 2009, we have demonstrated how college mergers can make the sector stronger and more efficient,” says David Jones, principal and chief executive of the new merged college.
