Welsh lamb a hit in the Middle East
WELSH Lamb is proving to be a major attraction at the largest food fair in the Middle East, while total export sales are set to top £100 million a year, according to Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales.
Companies from countries across the region are beating a path to HCC’s stand at Gulfood in Dubai, attracted by the provenance of the Welsh brand.
“There has been a tremendous interest in Welsh lamb, which is now seen in many quarters as the world’s premier lamb brand,” says HCC’s market development manager, Bill Joyce, who is in Dubai for the four-day event.
“It is already a favourite in the shops and restaurants of the United Arab Emirates and we have now had serious enquires from retailers and caterers from many other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Yemen and Iran.
“Welsh lamb exports in 2008 were valued at £91 million, and we confidently predict that the final figure for 2009 will top £100 million.”
