South Shropshire sheepdog trial celebrates 25 years
HAVING moved from Heathmynd, Hyssington, the South Shropshire trial celebrated its 25th anniversary at the new venue of Asterton.
The trial field at the two-session event was relatively flat giving a 400 yards outrun. As a backdrop, it had Long Mynd, a popular mountain, from which the spectators were entertained by gliders, microlight aircraft and hang gliders.
The course overall was the nearest to a national-sized one which has been encountered this year.
Without a shedding discipline, the Welsh hoggs were touchy all round the course needing expert handling to negotiate it, but the long drives did give competitors the opportunity to correct errors – albeit losing point in the process.
Adequate timing
Time allowed was 10 minutes, all of which was not needed by the better runs.
Winning the morning session, Graham Powell with Gwen had a clean outrun and lift, lost three points on the fetch, six on the drives and a clean pen
Jeff Hudd pushed him well, matching his outrun and lift, losing one more point on the fetch, but looked to be taking the lead on the drives. However, luck was not with him at the pen, he lost four points and had to settle for second place.
Jeff achieved two placings in the morning session, and Lorna Owen, who hosts the Obley Novice Trial, pushed Pennant Williams hard in the afternoon.
