Royal’s judge makes his mark at Berriew
IT was through the hard work of the able team of George Pritchard, Meirion and Roy Williams that the Berriew Trial was such a success.
The field at Cil Farm gave a 480 metre Fetch and, because the field rose gently away from the handler, all was in view. The turn around the post was to the left and undulations on the drives made careful handling necessary.
In the morning session there was no back to the pen, which assisted most to pen successfully, while in the afternoon the pen was complete, one minute being added to the time.
The Welsh Mules handled very well as the scores in both sessions show. Cyril Roberts, fresh from judging at the Royal Welsh Show trial, made his mark with Tweed in the morning.
The Von Dinther family achieved places in both sessions, as did Glyn Jones, Llanarmon, who won the afternoon trial. Angie Driscoll took two places in the afternoon, having competed at Abernant in the morning.
The trial raised £300, which will be donated to Cancer Research.
Abernant Trial, in its’ 39th year, was well supported with 77 runs. The course dropped away from the handler then rose to the line of the cross-drive, which was cleverly off-set, and gave an outrun of 380 yards.
Most handlers chose a right hand outrun, which although tight gave a better lift than to the left. The right-hand drive had its’ undulations, but it was the cross-drive gates that gave problems, being seen as an optical illusion by many.
Disregard
The mixed ewes handled well around the course, but had total disregard for the handler at the pen. Eirian Morgan had a good day, narrowly beating Colin Gordon in the Open.
Colin had a better outrun, but gave more away on his fetch, drives and shed; only four points separated them. It was good to see the young handler, Ioan Jones, in the scores, following his success in the Royal Welsh Show trial.
Bertie Evans had his hands full at New Cross, where he judged 102 runs, in both National and South Wales classes.
Sian Jones was narrowly beaten in the Open National, but won the Novice; she took two places in the Open South Wales.
Eirian Morgan, following his success at Abernant, performed well in the National, but he continued his family expertise in the South Wales class, winning both the open and the Novice.
The Annual Trials at the Royal Welsh Show were again a success, marred only by the effect of weather in The Main Ring.
The Champion of Champions had two competitions, on the Hill and in the main Ring, Bobby Dalziel Of Scotland won both of these. The Open Trials produced Jeff Evans,Graham Powell and Kevin Evans, all seasoned handlers.
They were joined by Ceri Browning following a cool and precise run. Kevin Evans and Spot won the Final convincingly on Thursday in the Main Ring.
It was so pleasing to see so many young handlers compete on the Hill, their presence bodes well for the future of trialling.
Two nominees were put forward by both the North and South Wales Societies for a competition in the Cattle Ring.
