Life of a Welsh shepherd shared on TV

A new documentary - Bywyd y Bugail (The Life of a Shepherd) - being broadcast on S4C next week – offers a very special portrait, not only of a way of life that is rapidly disappearing, but of a unique character, Mid Wales shepherd, Erwyd Howells.

Though very much a sociable person, he spends hours on his own each day and in the programme, which features very personal experiences, shares his life with viewers.

Erwyd, 61, originally from Ponterwyd, Ceredigion, now lives some six miles away in Capel Madog. He works for himself and has four dogs, collies Sbot and Ben and Welsh sheepdogs, Bob and Pero.

“They are an integral part of my life,” he says, as he covers a large area as a shepherd, from Ynys Las, over Plynlimon Mountain and the Elan Valley.

Interestingly, there are two sides to Erwyd’s personality. Although he lives on his own and enjoys the solitude of the mountain with his dogs, he has created a balance in his life by maintaining a lively social life.

At the heart of his community, he often acts as a caller at folk dances and gives lectures on folk history and traditions across the county.

He does not intend to retire, either, saying: “I want to die at the age of 91, with my shoes on my feet.”

O’r Galon: Bywyd y Bugail

The programme goes out on Tuesday, February 2, at 9pm on S4C with English and Welsh subtitles and is repeated on Sunday, February 7 at 10.20pm, S4C with English subtitles.
