Kevin Evans and Spot take victory at Llangadog trial

THE Llangadog and District trial, which can be remembered from pre-Second World War days, has been rejuvenated in recent years under the chairmanship of Gerald Lewis, and is run on the Old Racecourse Fields, the same venue as in the 1950s.

Giving an outrun of 350 metres (380 yards), the first half of the field was generally flat, the second half rising steeply to the lift.

A broken hedge caused some dogs to come in on their outrun and not take the gaps through the hedge to find their sheep. Despite this, most competitors chose a left-hand outrun.

Members of Llangadog YFC let the sheep out at the top of the field, while Martin Marrey worked all day taking them off after each run. The course directors efficiently had competitors to the post with no waste of time, allowing all 95 entrants to get their runs before 6.30pm.

Tough challenge

The drives, totalling 260 metres (280 yards), and in-hand work were completed on the flat part of the field.

Following a difficult right-hand turn around the handler, the Brecknock Hill Cheviot yearlings caused difficulty at the away-drive gates, which were offset and easily missed if the turn wasattempted too soon.

Early in the day, some good sheds were achieved, but many handlers, who had nursed their sheep around the course, were timed out at the pen, where the sheep were most stubborn. Later in the day there seemed to be one ewe more prone to break from the other three, and could, on occasion, challenge the dog.

Kevin Evans with Spot, achieved a notable victory. He had a clean outrun and lift, losing only one point on the fetch, six on the drives, a clean shed and losing only one point at the pen.

The next place went to Paul Tomkins, who lost points in all disciplines and was timed out at the pen. Third was Glyn Owen, who also lost around the course, had a clean shed, but a difficult pen.
