John Palmer and Jim in top form

AFTER winning the Yorkshire Society’s weekday open John Palmer and Jim took a second title at Cobble Hey on Sunday.

At his farm near Blubberhouses, Chris Ryder hosted the Yorkshire trial where £225 was raised for the 2011 World Trial.

Running was on Dalesbred shearlings that proved tricky to manoeuvre over the sizeable course and difficult to pen. Most took the gather of well over 400 yards left-handed following the fence as trees made right-handed difficult. Colin Dewhirst judged the entry of 45.

David Carlton was standing top with Ann on 74 points until, at 40, John went to the post with Jim (P. Rigby Bonnie, S. Thexton Nap).

A couple of marks were deducted from Jim’s gather before a clean lift. On the fetch and the first leg of the left-hand drive the sheep disappeared briefly into dips making straight lines hard to keep.

Nevertheless, Jim dropped just three points over the lengthy fetch and lost nothing on his drive away. He kept a near perfect line on the cross-drive but skimmed the last obstacle to lose six marks.

To finish he gained a strong advantage by having a very good pen, losing just one point to make the winning score of 78. Next to the post Ron Airey and Bet also had a good pen but losing more points over the outfield, they finished runners up on 75.

Cobble Hey

Trials were held on Saturday and Sunday at the Cobble Hey Open Farm and Gardens at Claughton on Brock.

Over an undulating rough pasture where the gather of over 300 yards was gently downhill, the running was on mainly Masham shearlings.

On the first day, where Robin Dean judged an entry of 34, the sheep proved quite challenging before running better on Sunday.

At 29, Carol Mellin and Maisie (W. Skidmore Gyp, W. Skidmore Moss) earned the winning score of 92, three clear of runners up Richard Hutchinson and Wenndale Roy.

The entry of 31 on Sunday was judged by Carol Palmer and with a late run at 30, John Palmer and Jim gained a single point advantage over Richard Briggs and Bill to take their second title within the week.

Derek Scrimgeour took the two top placings at the Northern open held on Saturday at Quebec.

Sloping gently downhill to the lift, the course had a fetch of over 350 yards and lengthy sections of driving.

Running was on spained Swaledale, Mule and Continental-cross ewes which overall were reasonable to handle. Bob Harland judged the entry of 53.

Derek and Fleece set the standard running at three with a score of 92, only to pull ahead with Zac (P. Simpson Killibrae Kim, P. Simpson Moss) on 94 points with run five.
