First mainland win for Kate Birkett
A WELL-controlled run gave Kate Birkett her first mainland win with Tessa at Golspie, heading up a list which included a number of regular Scottish team members.
The Cheviot gimmers ran reasonably well on a flat course with a good growth of grass, but they were difficult to pen and sometimes hard to shed.
Tessa (C. Sclater’s Scamp and Mist) ran out clean to the top and lifted and fetched well.
Her drive was good, but on the return to the pen, the sheep went off line and it took a little time to realign them. However, the pen went well, the shed was clean, and Kate had the honour of running the first Orkney dog for some years to win a trial on the mainland.
Michael Shearer’s Cap (M. Shearer’s Dan and Tib) had a clean start and good fetch, but as the sheep approached Michael at the post, they tried to give him a wide berth.
Michael soon remedied that and the drive went well from then on, but Cap too lost a little on the return to the pen at the end of the drive. He had to work to pen the sheep but he managed that and ended with a good shed to finish second.
