Duncan Campbell and Susie win at Lochbroom
A GOOD pen gave Duncan Campbell’s Susie the lead - and a win - at Lochbroom. The North Country Cheviot gimmers ran well on a challenging new course for the trial, and the running made for an exciting finish.
Angie MacDiarmid and Rex took an early lead with a good run, which was in danger of falling apart at the shed, as it did for some competitors.
The layout of the field allowed just enough space for the dogs to lift the sheep, but left no room for error and demanded they work carefully, so as not to upset the sheep before they reached them.
Rex ran out and lifted well, and lost only minor points on the course and chute but, at the shed, things did not go so easily.
Angie called Rex in to split the sheep, but he failed to hold the last two and almost doubled his existing penalty score. He still held the lead throughout most of the day.
Duncan Campbell’s Susie impressed the judge with her responses. The pair controlled the sheep and worked well together. They had no trouble at the shed took the lead two points clear.
Tweedsmuir
The Blackface gimmers at Tweedsmuir were touchy and difficult to handle at the top of the big course, and were inclined to bolt when the dog appeared. Some handlers coped well, but some good runs came adrift at the pen.
Allan Common’s Taddymoor Mirk was a little square in his outrun, but he landed at the right place and lifted cleanly.
His fetch was good, but he was low on the cross drive, and had to bend the line to get the sheep through the gate, but he managed to get all his obstacles.
The pen was good and Mirk shed the sheep, but he was hesitant to turn on to the last two.
