Dual successes for Jock Welsh and Tanhill Sweep
JOCK Welsh’s Tanhill Sweep (A. Baines’ Rick and Meg) was in good form over the weekend, winning both Knockgerran and Newton Stewart trials.
The big cross ewes ran well on the steep hill course at Knockgerran, but odd packets were hard to pen. Most dogs managed the big outrun without too much trouble, but some missed gates.
Sweep started out slightly wide from Jock’s feet but worked very well from there. He ran out to the top and lifted his sheep, fetched and drove them on good lines, with neat turns.
He penned well but found it difficult to separate the sheep at the shed, though he still finished well in front of the field.
At Newton Stewart, the Cheviot ewes ran well on the course but were sometimes hard to pen.
Sweep ran out, again slightly square, in a narrow field, but went down hill and out the flat ground at the top of the long course.
The sheep wanted to go their own way, but Sweep controlled and fetched them to Jock.
The drive was good, but the sheep gathered speed on the cross drive and Sweep flanked them to keep them on line, but he put them through the gate and finished with good work at hand.
