Rodney Down: 'Unmissable' deadline looms
Arla’s new investment strategy has left me confused and needing more clarity. At last the NFU has come off the fence and suggested a referendum, which I think would please many suppliers.
I know of a few in my area who would leave if this goes ahead. Maybe a price movement in the base Arla price would sweeten things up a little?
The funny thing is, I asked a few input suppliers to knock some money of their price so it would enable me to invest in my business, enabling me to use their products. I think you can guess the sort of response I received.
Harvest finished with wheat cut at 12.5 per cent moisture - the lowest for a few years.
The first half of the maize was cut last week and yielded about 37 tonnes per hectare (15t/acre). It was better than we first thought.
With a few more acres to plant this year, we have sown about 60ha (150 acres) of wheat and barley. Only the remainder of the maize and a bit of second wheat are still to be seeded.
Some of the second wheat we have already drilled has been dressed with Latitude to guard against take-all. The extra cost was just offset by the lower seed rate.
We had to get on with it this year as the “Boss” has set a deadline for me to be finished up by her milestone birthday (30).
I am rubbish at deadlines (and this one is serious, I am told), but apparently I am not allowed to be sat on a tractor while she parties.
Looking back, it was nine years ago when we were engaged on her 21st, I had finished my father’s wheat planting by October 9 and it was all extremely well yielding, so maybe she should make this an annual deadline?
