Paice calls for more on food labelling
FARMING Minister Jim Paice has called on supermarkets and processors to do more to improve labelling on meat and dairy products
Speaking ahead of a visit to Melton Mowbray today (Tuesday, August 3) he said products such as pies and ready meals were still a major source of confusion for consumers when it came to country of origin labelling,
He said while Defra preferred to take a voluntary approach with supermarkets and processors, the door remained open to compulsory rules.
He said: “It is a priority for the Government to ensure that food labelling is as clear as it could be. I’mthereforecalling on the industry to work with us to ensure that people can be confident about the origin of the products they buy.
“I’ve written to food industry leaders to emphasise that we want clarity and transparency for the consumers, who want to make a choice based on the origin of their food – particularly if they believe they’re buying British.
