Bradbury realises lifetime achievement with victory

Competition was rife at the International Cheese Awards, held at Nantwich showground in Cheshire. The hugely popular event saw 140 expert judges taste 3,230 cheese and dairy products from 24 different countries. Katie Lomas reports.

WHEN Bradbury and Sons were announced as winners of the supreme championship, the company’s director - George Paul - described it as a ‘lifetime achievement’.

“We’ve been in the trade for 42 years, and this is the first time we have won the supreme championship. I’m thrilled,” said Mr Paul.

The winning cheese was a two and a half year-old Parmesan Reggiano, which was made in Italy and imported and distributed by Bradbury and Sons, which operates from Buxton.

Hat-trick

The parmesan won the class for best organic cheese (hard pressed), which was open to non-UK exhibitors, before taking the prize for best overall continental cheese, and the overall supreme title.

The cheese, which is sold exclusively through Waitrose, was praised by judges for its ‘good depth of flavour and rounded and sweet notes’.

Bradbury and Son was founded in 1884 by the Reverend William John Bradbury, and was taken over by the Paul family in 1994.

It is the UK’s largest specialist cheese distributor, and the company now supplies around £90 million worth of cheese around the world. About half of the cheese distributed is continental.

Reserve in the supreme judging went to Milk Link, which won both the champion and reserve in the UK section.

The farmer-owned dairy co-operative and cheese manufacturer collected 48 awards, including 21 gold prizes in a field of more than 3,200 cheeses.

Winning the reserve supreme and best UK cheese was a Red Leicester produced by Milk Link’s Taw Valley creamery in Devon.

The reserve UK cheese was won by Taw Valley’s mature cheddar.

Blue cheeses

Milk Link’s other creameries also excelled, with four awards for its specialty blue cheeses going to Milk Link’s Tuxford and Tebbutt Creamery, based in Melton Mowbray. These

included a gold award for its Whole Blue Stilton and Two Halves of Mature Stilton.

Reece’s Creamery in Malpas, Cheshire, collected a further six awards, including a gold for its Traditional Caerphilly.
