Brothers fight for top title at British National Ploughing Championships

TWO brothers, both former world champions, fought for the title of British National Conventional Champion at the 59th British National Ploughing Championships, held at Soham, near Ely, Cambridgshire.

A crowd of more than 14,000 saw Simon Witty, of Hunmanby, near Filey, North Yorkshire, clinch the title with 232 points, just one point ahead of his brother James, East Lutton, Malton

It was the fifth time Simon had won the championship, in which third place went to Nigel Vickers from Whitchurch, Shropshire. All three ploughed with a Ford tractor and Kverneland plough.

In the reversible championship, Colin Bowen from Clun, near Craven Arms, Shropshire, ploughing with a New Holland and Kverneland combination, finished a massive 41 points ahead of last year’s champion Peter Alderslade from East Bolden, Tyne and Wear.

Simon Witty and Colin Bowen will now represent England at the 2010 World Ploughing Contest in New Zealand next April, while Peter Alderslade and Steven Bowen will plough for England in the 2010 European Reversible Ploughing Championships in the Republic of Ireland.

The overall National Young Farmers’ Champion Ploughman title went to Donald Tonkin from Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, who won the conventional class.

The horse ploughing championship was won by James Elliott from Beamish, Co Durham.

Richard Ingram clinched the national vintage ploughman title by winning the vintage hydraulic ploughing class. Richard Ingram and Michael Watkins, Sandbeck, South Yorkshire, who won the vintage trailing ploughing class, will represent England in the European Vintage Ploughing Championships in Scotland next October.

Next year’s championships will be held at Lincoln on October 9 and 10.
