Half a billion eggs recalled in US salmonella crisis
MORE than half a billion eggs have been recalled in the US due to a salmonella outbreak that officials are warning could get worse.
More than 1,000 people have been affected by a salmonella outbreak that has so far been traced to two large producers from the state of Iowa.
Hillandale farm has said it was recalling 170 million eggs after they were found to be contaminated with the same strain of salmonella as those from another Iowa egg producer, Wright County Egg, which has already recalled 380m eggs.
The US authorities have still not established how the contamination occurred and whether other producers are also affected.
Margate Hamburg, head of the Food and Drug Administration, said: “We don’t know exactly how the contamination got into the chicken population, into the egg population, and we’re not yet fully sure the extent of the recall that will be necessary to protect consumers.”
