MPs urged to support supermarket ombudsman Bill
A PRIVATE Members Bill to establish a grocery market ombudsman will be discussed by MPs today (Friday, March 5).
The NFU has urged MPs to support Albert Owen’s Bill which is at its second reading and would fast-track the implementation of an ombudsman. The Bill would supercede the Government’s three-month public consultation on the ombudsman which kicked off on February 5.
Terry Jones, NFU Head of Government Affairs, said an independent ombudsman was essential to enforce the Grocery Suppliers’ Code of Practice (GSCOP), which came into force on February 4, and urged MPs to give it support.
“This Bill provides a short-cut to Government to introduce an ombudsman so that suppliers have an independent, confidential means of reporting bad practice, such as retrospective demands for money and changes to trading terms.
“These are just some of the bullyboy tactics that have been reported to the NFU – and we want them to remain a thing of the past,” said Mr Jones.
