Suzuki KingQuad - raising the stakes on smoothness

The latest Suzuki ATV lives up to our old addage of ‘like a well-oiled sewing machine’.

If you think back to the old, manual three-range, independent suspension 300cc KingQuad of years ago, the same was true then.

Suzuki’s engines are so smooth and quiet, but it is of perhaps greater significance in today’s automatic transmission machines, where so often perceived engine speed is disproportionate to forward speed.

The KingQuad 500 seems to purr along with around the same level of engine rpm you would expect from a manual machine.

Adding to overall smoothness and comfort is the addition of power steering. The latest KingQuad probably raises the benchmark for a smooth, quiet ride.

Most modern ATVs have vastly improved steering geometry which, on its own, takes out much of the bump-steer and kick-back over rough terrain. Power steering just takes it that stage further.

The Suzuki is not, of course, the only bike with power steering and like the others, it displays one of the main advantages of this technology when reversing a trailer.

It is not the only modern ATV to suffer, we assume, from aesthetics taking priority over practicality. The load racks might look neat, but they really need to be bigger.

The mudguards are quite practical though - wide enough to keep you reasonably clean and access to the ball hitch is pretty good.

Overall, the KingQuad 500 is a lovely bike with selectable four-wheel drive and front differential lock making it easy to drive. It is priced at £6,299 plus VAT.
