Lib Dems 'will block crofting bill'
THE Liberal Democrats in Scotland have warned they will vote to bring down the Crofters Bill unless Ministers rethink proposals to create a map-based crofting register.
This week the Scottish Government lodged almost 150 amendments to its own Crofting Bill which, claim the Lib Dems, highlight the ‘confusion and disarray within the Government about the Bill, which had ‘met with histility’ from the crofting counties.
Lib Dems’ rural affairs spokesman Liam McArthur said the vast majority of crofters viewed the Ministers’ ‘obsession’ with creating a map-based register as a ‘costly waste of time’. “To make matters worse, the cost and hassle involved are set to fall on individual crofters themselves.
“At a time when Governments at all levels are having to look at making cost savings, the case for the SNP’s map-based register is undermined entirely. Liberal Democrats have made it clear we will not support the Government’s costly and unnecessary register.”
