Lameness link to lower SSCs

BRAND new work from Nottingham University suggests lame cows produce better quality milk, said Dr Huxley.

Preliminary results showed a cow with a lameness score of 3 (severely lame) had a SCC 16,000 cells lower than a sore 0 cow (not lame) over six months.

Dr Huxley said more work was needed to understand this, but it was possibly to do with how lame cows lay in the cubicles, inadvertently improving udder hygiene.
