Grass and clovers for low phosphorus fields

BREEDING grass and legume varieties with increased phosphorus absorption power is one of the current projects said Prof Maltin.

Phosphorus is a non-renewable natural product, mined in just a few countries with no synthetic alternative. Estimates suggest world resources will run out within the next 60 to 130 years.

QMS is therefore looking at grasses and clovers that can perform well in low phosphorus conditions.

It has identified four lines of clover varieties as good yielders in such conditions, taking individual plants from those lines to multiply new varieties and evaluating them in fields of low phosphorus status.

The next step will be to assess the performance of livestock fed the low phosphorus herbage.
