EID still on EU agenda

SHEEP producers were being assured at the Royal Welsh Show yesterday (Monday, July 20) not to think for one minute that because EID was implemented across the EU from December 31 that it had ‘slipped’ off NFU Cymru’s action agenda.

Speaking as vice chairman of the COPA sheep group and the EU sheep and goats advisory committee, union president, Ed Bailey, said he was fully aware of the problems the regulation was causing not just in Wales but in many other countries throughout Europe.

The final report published by the Welsh Assembly Government and Hybu Cig Cymru into the recent trials in Wales clearly shows that major problems still exist with the technology working in practical situations,” he said.

“I have real concerns over how the system will cope when it is first really tested at breeding and store sales this autumn.

“We met the Minister last month to highlight the need for a common sense approach to inspections and I will also continue at a European level to push for an early review of this unsatisfactory regulation.

“I am also pleased that at long last the UK Government has invited and the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer safety has accepted an invitation to visit the UK and see first hand the practical problems that EID and the recording requirements that go with it place on our sheep sector.”
