Welsh NHS trust urged to source local
NORTH Wales AM, Brynle Williams, is pressing Welsh Assembly Health Minister, Edwina Hart, to take on board local procurement practices that have saved one NHS trust in England £6 million.
“For the last seven years I have struggled to get the Assembly Government to take local procurement by the NHS seriously,” he says.
“But now Nottingham University Hospital Trust has finally dispelled the myth that local food means a bigger bill for taxpayers.
“It is ludicrous to be importing food from thousands of miles away when it can be sourced cheaper on our own doorstep.
“It is also reassuring for patients and their families to know that that they are being served good quality local food during their hospital stay,” he added.
“Wales has the opportunity to save millions of pounds while supporting local businesses that have been frozen out of large contracts.
“I have urged the Minister to consider reviewing procurement practices to see if valuable NHS resources can be saved.”
